Statins pros and cons

Statins pros and cons
Statins are tablets to reduce cholesterol. The medicine of the last decades is oriented towards the prevention of severe conditions. Scientists are trying to determine the sources of diseases, which most often lead to disability and death. And one of the "targets" for a powerful counteraction was "cholesterol", which contributes to the development of atherosclerosis and, as a result, the multiple pathologies of the cardiovascular system. To normalize the concentration of this substance (in fact, groups of substances) in the blood, specific drugs statins were invented.
There are a lot of issues that can be reduced to the following: "Is cholesterol harmful?" Some research groups show that the problem is more multifaceted: lipoproteins (substances from which total cholesterol develops) play a diverse role in the body and a sharp decrease in their concentration may adversely affect the human condition (health of the nervous, muscular, bone tissues, for example). And for the general public, new "sensations" have already appeared, such as: "Cholesterol - useful! Eat more egg yolks and butter! " On this field today there is a real "battle". Many of its participants are simply financially interested in supporting one side or another. Others are ideological, passionate and unselfish adherents of "degreasing" or "naturalness". In order to work out a balanced position, one should not even try to compare the solidity of the conclusions of hundreds of small and large experiments proving exactly the opposite things.
Suffice it to admit that fats are just as essential component of metabolism, making up healthy tissues, such as proteins or carbohydrates. To talk about their harm is needed on the basis of specific data on the state of a particular organism. That is, if a patient has cholesterol plaques that disrupt blood flow in the blood vessels and this is accompanied by elevated triglyceride content in the blood, then cholesterol concentration should be reduced. We remind you that this term includes several substances - lipoproteins. High-density lipoproteins are called "good cholesterol," and low and very low - "bad cholesterol." It is the last fraction of the action of statins.
Statins pros and cons:
The attitude of doctors to the drugs of this group is also ambiguous. Some experts piously believed in the absolute benefit of lowering cholesterol and consider it reasonable to prescribe statins to all patients at any risk:
the presence of vascular pathologies;
the detected increase in cholesterol, the coefficient of atherogenicity;
a diet rich in fats;
excess weight;
and so on;
In support of their rightness these doctors cite such statistics: the risk of death from cardiovascular causes when using statins is reduced, on average, by 20%.
But in a professional environment, there is another opinion about such drugs. By the way, it is also based on research and experience in the use of drugs of this group. Adherents of this view pay more attention to the possibility of developing side effects accompanying treatment with statins. In addition, they indicate that these drugs significantly affect the patients of adulthood, and in elderly patients the effect is not so obvious. There are other, quite fair, doubts.
These drugs have an undesirable effect on the liver, increasing the activity of its transaminases (ALT and AST). A severe consequence of statins treatment may be myopathy and even rhabdomyolysis (destruction of muscle tissue). Also, there may be disturbances in the work of the nervous system, including cognitive function ("mental activity"). There is evidence of the possibility of developing type 2 diabetes. Therapy is incompatible with conception and pregnancy, since cholesterol is necessary for the proper development of the fetus.
Statins of the new generation:
The first generation of statins includes lovastatin, simvastatin. The latter is still actively used. Preparations based on simvastatin:
And others.
Of the third generation, atorvastatin and its preparations are best known:
The fourth is rosuvastatin and, based on it:
And so on.
The newest remedy from this group (also IV generation) is Pitavastatin (Livalo). Its main advantage is the possibility of taking low doses. This reduces the frequency and intensity of side effects.
It is interesting that many doctors suggest not to focus on reviews about statins from patients. After all, subjectively, a person does not feel changes, although this claim is debatable. For example, those who complain about the violation of intelligence, linking them with the reception of such funds, even sensed the difference. There are reviews of both muscle pains caused by such treatment, and allergy to statins.
- A three-month course of atorvastatin allowed to bring the coefficient of atherogenity back to normal. As far as I understand, now my vessels are out of danger.
The reason for the search for lipid-lowering drugs should be the results of a blood test, showing an increase in the concentration of LDL and VLDL, the coefficient of atherogenicity. In parallel, it is necessary to examine the state of blood vessels and heart. There are diseases that can cause an increase in cholesterol concentration, for example, hypothyroidism, certain pathologies of the liver, kidneys and adrenal glands - these effects should be excluded. The tendency to increased triglyceride concentration may be hereditary.
Healthy people with a slight excess of normal indicators need to adjust, first of all, a way of life:
• Nutritional habits (about a little lower) - reduce the amount of consumed fats;
• Reduce body weight by adding reasonable physical activity;
If pathologies that violate the metabolism of fats are found, the main emphasis is on their treatment. If these methods do not have the expected effect or if the risk is significant then only the question of prescribing statins or other lipid-lowering drugs is decided.

Why are generic drugs cheaper?
To date, many know that it is very expensive to get sick. Big prices for pharmaceuticals of various imported drugs are not affordable for everyone. That's why many are interested in substitutes. These are cheap analogues of expensive medicines, which are called generics. However, the questions are why some are more expensive and why are generic drugs cheaper for the whole population.
The fact is that the search for a unique formula that is able to fight a particular type of disease is a lot of resources, including financial ones. Then you need to spend a certain amount of time and money to produce the drug. Before releasing drugs for sale, the company patents it. The cost of a patent is very expensive, which explains the high cost of new drugs. But the company also tries to reimburse itself for the development of those drugs that have not passed the test at the expense of high prices, and also those that passed because this process is also difficult and necessary to determine all possible side effects.  To conduct preclinical studies, numerous tests are used at a wide variety of biological levels-molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, and organism. The experiments are carried out both in vitro and in vivo (on living cells, organisms).
